Education

Shagdarjav Chimeddorj was born in 1954 in Tuv Aimag, Mongolia. He graduated State Pedagogical Institute in 1984, Ulaanbaatar Mongolia. Chimeddorj invites you to enter a yurt. His paintings will help you slide like sunlight into the Mongolian tent, travel through tradition and modern times, discover large spaces of steppes and blue sky. Chimeddorj alternates between two styles: ink on rice paper and oil paint on big canvases. His drawings on rice paper are a ground for study and play. His ink blackens these thin cream-colored sheets by the hundred; he draws horses and portraits with straight lines, sculptural designs and fast curbs. Inscriptions, signatures, stamps and motifs are borrowed from his painting style. Color stains are the rhythm to his ingenious compositions. His lines are fast and free flowing. His paintings style shows both mastery of western oil painting techniques and the typical nomadic vision of space. Big green steppes and bronze-colored skies color his canvases. The warm earthy reds and yellows contrast with the acid blues and greens of cold winter days. Large color planes structure the space. The “turning” perspective is borrowed from traditional representations and shows the sight one can experience when in the steppes. The background is made of both earth and sky. Multiple points of view, big and small figures and schematic architecture get us lost in space. Chimeddorj is an eye. He paints moving horses and catches the attitudes of these animals he knows so well. His lines get childish when he shows past and present life in Mongolia, when in traditional dress or the interior of a city apartment. His works show coherence in sensitivity and serenity, in the beautiful looks between the characters. If you could compare his painting style with others, it would be Manet for his flat tints, Picasso for the dexterity, Miro for the childish lines. You can only compare him to great masters. But Chimeddorj has his own style with the typical themes of Mongolian culture. He is an ambassador of his homeland. He had been trying his talent in several careers such as 1979- 1980 Designer, Wool Factory. 1984 – 1985 Teacher, Children’s Palace, Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia.1985 – 1986 Artist Monumental Decoration Factory, Ulaanbaatar Mongolia.1993- 1995 Teacher, Fine Art University, Ulaanbaatar Mongolia.1985 – Member of Union of Mongolian Artist. 2002 – Member of Directors Board of Union of Mongolian Artist /UMA/.
